CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Brandeis University volleyball team
improved to 3-2 in the University Athletic Association today with a
pair of wins at the second UAA round robin. The Judges defeated
Chicago, 3-1, and Carnegie Mellon, 3-2. It was the Judges' first
win over the Tartans since 1997.
In the opener, the Judges rallied after dropping the first game to
Chicago to win, 26-30, 30-26, 30-22, 30-20. Sophomore middle
blocker Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.) and junior outside
hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) tied for the team-high
in kills with 17. McAllister hit for a .533 percentage and added
five blocks, while Wingenbach swung at a .256 clip and contributed
13 digs and three service aces. Rookie setter Abby Blasco (Greeley,
Colo.) had 42 assists and four service aces, while junior libero
Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) anchored the team's
defense with 19 digs.
In the second match of the day, the Judges again rallied from a
deficit, trailing two games to one, 25-30, 30-21, 22-30. Games four
and five was a white-knuckle affair that the Judges pulled out,
35-33 and 16-14. Brandeis led game four by 11 at one point, but CMU
answered, forcing the Judges to fend off three match points. In
game five, Carnegie led, 8-7, at the switch-over and 13-11, but
Brandeis won five of the last six points for the victory. The win
moved coach Kim's squad to into a three-way tie for third place in
the UAA with the Tartans and NYU. Junior outside hitter Becca
Schwartz (Newcastle, N.H.) led the way offensively with 12 kills
and a .346 hitting percentage, while Blasco had 48 assists, 16 digs
and four blocks. Defensively, Ruggiero had 18 digs and sophomore
Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.) had seven blocks. Carfagno
also contributed nine kills and three service aces.
