Volleyball falls to WashU but tops Case to earn third seed at UAA championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Brandeis University volleyball team went 1-1 on the final day of University Athletic Association round robin play at Case Western Reserve today, as the Judges fell to seventh-ranked Washington University, 3-1, but defeated host Case, 3-0. With the win over Case, who upset New York University today, the Judges will be the third seed at the UAA championships, to be held at the University of Rochester the first weekend of November.

Brandeis (18-6) played tight contest with WashU, taking the first game and staying within five points in the next three, falling 27-30, 30-25, 30-25, 30-25. Junior outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the team against the Bears with 17 kills, 14 digs and two blocks, while rookie outside hitter Elizabeth Villalino (Kailua, Hawaii) had 13 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. Rookie setter Abby Blasco (Greeley, Colo.) had 43 assists and matched Wingenbach defensively with 14 digs.

Against Case, head coached by Karen Farrell '93, the Judges swept their way to victory, 30-19, 30-27, 30-24. Wingenbach led the way with 19 kills and a .300 hitting percentage. She also contributed 12 digs, two service aces and two blocks. Blasco had another fine performance with 36 assists, 15 digs, six kills, and three aces.
