Wingenbach earns second-team All-UAA honors; Blasco twins named honorable mention

WALTHAM, Mass. - Brandeis University volleyball senior outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach of Buffalo, N.Y., has been named as a second-team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection for the second year in a row. Sophomore sisters Abby and Paige Blasco of Greeley, Colo., were honorable-mention All-UAA selections at setter and outside hitter, respectively.

Wingenbach finished second on the Judges and ninth in the UAA in kills, averaging 2.77 kills per set. In conference play, she finished third, averaging 3.18 kills per set. Wingenbach led the squad in total digs with 371 and trailed Abby Blasco on the team with 3.25 digs per set. Wingenbach earned tournament MVP honors at Brandeis's Judges Classic and became Brandeis's all-time leader in kills this season, finishing her career with 1,857. She is also the Judges' all-time leader in kills per set (3.59), attack attempts (5,413) and games played (517), while ranking second in career digs (1,596), service aces (227) and matches played (145).

Abby Blasco, the 2007 UAA Rookie of the Year, was an honorable-mention All-UAA for the second year in a row. She led Brandeis in assists, averaging 9.84 per set, fourth-most in the UAA. Her 3.31 digs per set led the team and ranked 10th in the conference. In Association play, Abby averaged 10.33 assists per set to rank 3rd. She also led the squad with a .250 hitting percentage.

Paige Blasco, who missed the 2007 campaign due to injury, led Brandeis in kills, averaging 3.14 kills per set, third-most in the UAA. She also finished fourth on the squad with 2.85 digs per set and second in total digs with 308. Her 3.03 kills per set in conference play were fourth in the circuit.  Both Abby and Paige earned UAA Athlete of the Week honors once during the 2008 season.

Brandeis finished the 2008 season with a 19-13 record under head coach Michelle Kim, finishing fourth in the UAA for the second season in a row. The Judges have only finished higher than fourth once before in UAA play, which began in 1986.

Wingenbach is a 2005 graduate of City Honors School. She is the daughter of Christine Naples of Buffalo, N.Y., and Philip Wingenbach.

Abby and Paige Blasco are a 2007 graduates of Frontier Academy. They are the daughters of Leon and Ellie Blasco, Greeley, Colo.
