Wingenbach named MVP as Brandeis wins Judges Classic

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis Volleyball team swept their way to their own Judges Classic tournament this weekend, defeating three out-of-region squads. The Judges had little probem, sweeping their way past Baruch College from New York City (25-5, 25-19, 25-17), SUNY-Geneseo from Upstate New York (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) and Moravian College from Bethlehem, Pa. (25-18, 25-15, 25-13). Senior outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) earnedt ournament MVP honors in her final regular-season home appearance, while sophomore Nicole Smith (Marietta, Ga.) also was selected to the All-Tournament team.

Against Baruch on Friday evening, Wingenbach led the way with a double-double, recording 12 kills and 13 digs, both team-highs. She swing for a .308 percentage with just four errors in 26 attempts. Smith was even better with a .444 percentage (9 K-1 E-18 TA) and a team-high six blocks (one solo). Sophomore setter Abby Blasco (Greeley, Colo.) had 30 assists and quarterbacked the team to a .289 hitting percentage.

In their second match against Geneseo on Saturday afternoon, both Wingenbach and Blasco had double-double performances. Wingenbach had match-highs 13 kills and 15 digs, while Blasco had 32 assists and matched Wingenbach with 15 digs. Senior libero Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had 13 digs. Smith added six kills and five blocks (two solo).

The Judges had one of their most balances performances of the season against Moravian, as four players had either eight or nine kills and the team swung for a .351 percentage, their second-highest performance of the season. Sophomore outside hitter Paige Blasco (Greeley, Colo.) and junior middle blocker Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.) each had nine kills, while Smith and junior right-side Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.) had eight a piece. McAllister led the team with a terrific .800 hitting percentage (9 K-1 E-10 TA). Abby Blasco finished with 35 assists.

For the tournament, Wingenbach led the Judges with 30 kills and 39 digs, while Smith had 23 kills (tied with Paige Blasco for second) and 14 blocks (three solo).
