PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team fell
to defending conference champion Emory University today, 3-0, in
the first University Athletic Association match of the season for
both teams. The first UAA Round Robin is being held at Carnegie
Mellon University.
The Judges hung with the No. 2 team in the nation in the first two
sets, 25-17, 25-19, before the Eagles pulled away in the third,
25-13. Brandeis was led by senior outside hitter Lorraine
Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.), who had a double-double with
10 kills and 10 digs. Wingenbach swung for a .269 hitting
percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Paige Blasco
(Greeley, Colo.) added eight kills and six digs, while classmate
Nikki Smith (Marrieta, Ga.), a middle blocker. led
the team at the net with three blocks.
The Judges are next in action tomorrow with UAA matches against
New York University and the University of Chicago.
