Volleyball suffers first loss of season, 3-0, to Wellesley

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University volleyball suffered its first loss of the season tonight, dropping a 3-0 decision to local rival Wellesley in Red Auerbach Arena. The set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 25-20. All three sets were tight through the early stages, with the Blue (3-0) able to pull away from the Judges (3-1) at the end of each with a late run.

Brandeis's offense was paced by junior outside hitter Si-Si Hensley (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) finishing with eight kills and sophomore outside hitter Liz Hood (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Acad.) adding six. Sophomore libero Elsie Bernaiche (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) had 17 digs to lead the defense, while junior setter Yael Einhorn (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) had 23 assists.

Wellesley's top performers were junior OH Kellyn O'Brady (Garden City, Mich./Garden City), who had a match-high 10 kills, and sophomore Sydney Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall), with seven kills and 11 digs. Junior libero Traci Hamanaka (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) also had 11 digs, while senior DS Vivian Hu (Bellaire, Texas/Bellaire) had nine digs and four service aces.

Both squads are back in action in Auerbach Arena this weekend for the Brandeis Invitational. The Judges kick off against two more local rivals on Friday evening, taking on Babson at 5 p.m. and Tufts at 7. Wellesley takes on Rhode Island College at 7 as well.
