Hood powers volleyball to four-set win over NYU

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Brandeis volleyball team earned its first University Athletic Association win since 2010 today with a four-set victory over NYU at the second UAA Round Robin held at Carnegie Mellon University. After the Judges won the first set, 25-14, the Violets bounced back with a 25-22 victory in the second set. Brandeis closed out the match in the next two sets, 25-17, 25-20. With the win, the Judges improved to 14-7, 1-3 in the UAA, while NYU fell to 13-8, 1-3 UAA.

Brandeis was paced by sophomore outside hitter Liz Hood (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Acad.), who tied her career-high with 22 kills. Hood also made just five errors in 40 attempts for a .425 hitting percentage, her fifth match hitting better that .400 this season. Junior OH Si-Si Hensley (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) just missed her sixth double-double of the season with nine kills and a team-high 17 digs. Junior middle blocker Lauren Berens (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) added eight kills and four service aces, while rookie middle blocker Maddie Engeler (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic) had career highs with nine blocks and six solo blocks. 

The Judges also dropped a three-set match to 16th-ranked University of Chicago, 25-21, 25-22, 25-10, dropping their overall record to 14-8, 1-4 UAA. In that match, Hood had 11 kills, but no other Brandeis player registered more than five. Sophomore libero Elsie Bernaiche (Plantville, Conn./Southington) had 15 digs to lead the Judges, while junior setter Yael Einhorn (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) had 25 assists.
