The Judges fell to No. 5 Washington and Case Western Reserve in their first two matches at the UAA Championships at Carnegie Mellon. Brandeis will face NYU tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. in the 7th-place match.
Julie Kim recorded two double-doubles, but it wasn't enough against the #4 team in the nation in WashU, the defending UAA champs from Chicago and their rivals from NYU.
Despite a team-high 13 kills on the afternoon by sophomore Jessica Kaufman, including 10 in the first match, the Judges saw their three-match winning streak snapped by Emmanuel and CSC.
Liz Hood (left) had 15 kills, while Summer Koop (right) swung at a .444 clip and had four blocks, including one with rookie Jessie Moore on match point.
The Judges dropped a dramatic five-set match against Wesleyan before getting swept by Wellesley. Senior middle blocker/right side Carly Gutner-Davis had nine kills on the day after missing Friday's match.
The Judges played tight in the first two sets, erasing five set points before falling in the second, but the Bears pulled away in the third. Summer Koop led the Judges with seven kills and .400 hitting percentage.
Elsie Bernaiche set the school's career digs record over the weekend, while Summer Koop had a terrific offensive showing in head coach Alesia Vaccari's first Brandeis win.
Vaccari, a two-time All-American setter at Springfield College, joins the Judges from Simmons College. She was the 2011 GNAC Coach of the Year and was named to the AVCA's Thirty Under Thirty in 2012.
