Bernaiche, Soboff claim UAA Athlete of the Week honors

WALTHAM, Mass. — Seniors Michael Soboff of Framingham, Mass., and Elsie Bernaiche of Plantsville, Conn., have been selected as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for September 2, the first weekend of the 2014-15 season. Soboff was the men's soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Bernaiche was the volleyball Defensive Player of the Week.

      Bernaiche led Brandeis with 62 digs over the weekend at the Western Connecicut State University Invitational. The Judges went 1-2, with a win over Mount Ida College and losses to Rivier College and the host WCSU. With a 6.20 digs-per-set average, Bernaiche leads the UAA in digs after the first weekend of action. She had 17 digs against Rivier, 20 against Mount Ida and 24 against Western Connecticut. With her 62 digs over the weekend, Bernaiche became Brandeis's career leader with 1,608. She broke an 11-year-old record set by Marni Friedman '04. In 2013, Bernaiche finished second in the conference in digs.

      Soboff was honored for the first time in his career after earning Most Valuable Player honors at the Keene State Classic in Keene, N.H., August 30 and 31. He opened the week with his first career two-goal game against Hobart College on Saturday, scoring in the 60th and 74th minutes as the Judges routed the Statesmen, 5-0. Against the host Owls of Keene State College, Soboff scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute as the Judges pulled out a 2-1 win thanks to a goal in the 80th minute by sophomore Josh Ocel of North Attleboro, Mass. Soboff, a transfer from Rutgers University, was the Judges' third-leading scorer in 2013 with 22 points. He tied for the team and UAA lead with 10 assists as a junior, earning All-UAA honorable mention.

      Soboff is a 2011 graduate of Newton North High School.

      Bernaiche is a 2011 graduate of Southington High School.
