NEW LONDON, N.H. – In a tri-match at Colby-Sawyer College today, the Brandeis University volleyball team saw its three-match winning streak snapped. The Judges fell to Emmanuel College and the host Chargers in straight sets to fall to 5-9 overall this season.

In their opener against Emmanuel, Brandeis fell, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23. The Judges' defense was terrific, delivering 59 digs, led by senior libero Elsie Bernaiche (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) with a match-high 21 and 13 from classmate outside hitter Liz Hood (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Acad.). The offense struggled to get on track, hitting in the negative for two of the three sets and the full match. Sophomore right-side Jessica Kaufman (Tucson, Ariz./Cienaga) was the top player in the positive, with 10 kills and five errors in 25 attempts for a .200 percentage.

Against host Colby-Sawyer, set scores were 25-17, 25-21, 25-12. The offense was led by Hood and senior middle blocker Carly Gutner-Davis (Del Mar, Calif./Canyon Crest Acad.), who had six kills apiece. Gutner-Davis and rookie Jessie Moore were the only players in the positive against the Chargers. Rookie setter Julie Kim (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) just missed a double-double with 21 assists and nine digs. Bernaiche led the defense with 15 digs.

Brandeis returns to action on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at Endicott College before heading to Atlanta next weekend for the first University Athletic Association round robin of the 2014.
