Volleyball claims eighth seed at UAA Championships

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Brandeis University volleyball team lost four University Athletic Association matches this weekend in the second UAA Round Robin at the University of Chicago. The Judges are now 5-17 overall, 0-7 in the UAA, and will be the eighth seed at the conference championships in a couple of weeks.

Coach Alesia Vaccari's squad opened the weekend taking on Case Western Reserve, coached by Brandeis alumna Karen (Chambers) Farrell '93. The Spartans swept the Judges, 25-16, 25-17, 25-10. Three Brandeis players tied for team-high honors with five kills: rookie outside hitter Jessie Moore, junior middle blocker /right side Summer Koop (Long Valley, N.J. / West Morris Central) and junior MB Maddie Engeler (Sandusky, Ohio / St. Mary Central Catholic). Senior libero Elsie Bernaiche (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) led all players in the match with 26 digs, while rookie setter Julie Kim (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) posted her seventh double-double of the season with 11 assists and 10 digs.

Up next on Saturday night, the Judges met Carnegie Mellon, falling by scores of 25-7, 25-8, 25-18. Engeler had five kills, junior setter Maggie Swenson (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) had 11 assists and two service aces, and Bernaiche led the team with 10 digs.

On Sunday, third-ranked Emory was first on the docket. The Eagles swept the match, 25-14, 25-18, 25-8.  Moore was the most effect Brandeis player against EU, with seven kills and just one error in 12 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Swenson added 18 assists in her second-straight start, while Bernaiche had 13 digs and three service aces.

Finally, the Judges met the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon and played their most competitive match of the UAA regular season. Brandeis won its first set in conference play before falling, 25-18, 25-9, 20-25, 25-12. Engeler was the top offensive threat, with seven kills and just one error in 24 chances for a .250 hitting percentage. She also had a pair of blocks (one solo). Moore, Koop and senior Shemira Pennyman (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney) each had five kills. Bernaiche led all players with 32 digs, while sophomore Jessica Kaufman (Tucson, Ariz./Cienaga) had three blocks, two of which were solo. Kim had 16 assists.

Brandeis is back in action next weekend when they take on Middlebury, Amherst and Tufts at the Hall of Fame Tournament. The UAA Championship tournament will be held November 8-9 at Carnegie Mellon University.
