Volleyball splits on Invitational Day 2 by rallying past Southern Maine, 3-1

WALTHAM, Mass.  –  The Brandeis volleyball team dropped a pair of extremely tight sets in a 3-0 loss to Endicott College (30-28, 25-16, 25-23) to start the second day of the Brandeis Invitational, but the Judges rallied from a 1-0 deficit to earn their first home win of the season over the University of Southern Maine, 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-15)

VS. ENDICOTT – HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brandeis roared out to a 9-2 lead in the first set.
  • The Judges were ahead, 15-6, but the Gulls clawed their way back into it. After six ties and five lead changes, EC took it, 30-28.
  • The first set featured 53 digs.
  • In the second, Endicott used an 8-0 run after Brandeis scored the first three points, and the Gulls never looked back winning, 25-16.
  • The Judges trailed 19-13, but went on a 10-4 run to tie the set at 23 before EC closed it out on a Tori McIntyre kill.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Rookie outside hitter Grace Krumpack (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) turned in Brandeis's first double-double performance with a match-high 10 kills and 10 digs. She also hit .296 (10 K-2 E-27 TA)
  • Rookie setter Allison Harmsworth (Bradenton, Fla./Newsome) had a career-high 24 assists in her first start, adding five kills.
  • Rookie libero Yvette Cho (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) topped the team with 17 digs to lead all players.
 

VS. SOUTHERN MAINE – HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges dropped the first set for the sixth time this season, 25-20, but rallied to win the match for the second time.
  • The first set included a point that crossed the net 22 times.
  • The Judges rolled in the second set, opening up a 9-3 lead and winning, 25-17.
  • Brandeis rallied twice in the third. They erased a 9-3 deficit with an 8-2 run to tie it at 11.
  • After Southern Maine answered with an 8-2 run of their own, rookie setter Leah Pearlman (El Paso, Texas/El Paso) served nine in a row to give Brandeis a 20-19 lead.
  • The Judges closed out the match on a 12-2 run to win the third set, 25-15. Rookie middle hitter Zara Platt (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley) had four of her eight kills in the key run.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brandeis's .345 hitting percentage (13 K-3 E-29 TA) in the fourth set was their highest of the season.
  • Offensively, seniors Maddie Engeler (Huron, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic) and Summer Koop (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) tied for team-high honors with nine kills each.
  • Engeler and Koop also both had two blocks each.
  • Sophomore right-side Lia Goldberg (Springfield, N.J./Union County Magnet) tallied a career-high 11 digs, but four other players had between 7 and 9 digs.
  • Pearlman matched her career-high with 30 assists.
  • Cho was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 3.47 digs per set for the tournament. She also contributed 12 assists and eight service aces.
