Volleyball takes down Emerson in straight sets

BOSTON, Massachusetts (some info taken from an Emerson College press release) — The Brandeis University volleyball team had a sweet start to the Jewish New Year on Thursday night, taking down the Emerson Lions in straight sets, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19. The Judges raise their record to 7-3 with the win, while Emerson falls to 4-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • SET ONE (Brandeis, 25-22)

    • Brandeis grabbed the set's first lead, 4-2, before Emerson produced the next eight of nine points to push ahead, 10-5.

    • With Emerson leading, 18-11, Brandeis went on an 8-1 run to even the score at 19-19.

    • The Lions regained the lead, 22-19, on a trio of Brandeis attack errors, but the Judges tallied the final six scores to take the 25-22 set win.

  • SET TWO (Brandeis, 25-18)

    • Emerson jumped out to an early lead, 8-3, but Brandeis went on an 8-0 run to go ahead, 11-8.

    • The Judges grabbed control after that, going ahead, 15-9, and eventually taking the set by a seven-point margin.

  • SET THREE (Brandeis, 25-19)

    • The score was close early on before the Lions once again were able to take an early-set lead, 11-7.

    • With Emerson leading, 13-10, Brandeis stormed back with a 6-0 run to go ahead, 16-13.

    • The Lions eventually squared up the score at 17-all, but Brandeis took back the lead and won the match on a 4-0 run.

FOR THE JUDGES

  • Junior Shea Decker-Jacoby (Los Angeles, Calif. / Marymount) played an all-around game for Brandeis tonight, compiling a match-leading totals in kills (10) and a team-leading total in service aces (four). She also added six digs.

  • Freshman Marissa Borgert (Blaine, Minn. / Spring Lake Park) and junior Zara Platt (Fountain Valley, Calif. / Fountain Valley) both added seven assists on efficient attack percentages; Borgert hit .462 and Platt hit .400.

  • Two Judges had double-digit assist totals; junior Leah Pearlman (El Paso, Texas / El Paso) had a match-high 16, and freshman Megan Osorio Moran (Hollywood, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) added 10 helpers.

  • Junior Yvette Cho (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) led all comers with 21 digs, while junior Jillian Haberli (Cheshire, Conn. / Cheshire) had 12 of her own.

  • The Judges hit .154 for the match (33K-17E-104TA).

  • This was Brandeis' first road match of the season.

  • The victory was the Judges seventh overall, matching both last year's total and head coach Alesia Vaccari's highest win total in her three years at the helm.

UP NEXT

  • Brandeis takes a short break before it heads to Cleveland, Ohio for its first UAA action against Chicago, Emory, and Rochester, Saturday and Sunday, September 30 and October 1.

  • Emerson heads off to Mount Holyoke in search of its first conference win on Saturday, September 23 at 1 PM.
