Warwick, Brandeis men's x-c finish third at UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Running with limited squads, the Brandeis men's and women's cross country teams competed in their first big meets of the season, the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 19.

The performance of the meet for the Judges was turned in by junior Kate Warwick (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough). Warwick had her best-ever indivual perforamance over the 5K course by finishing in third place. With a time of 17:57, Warwick was 23 seconds out of first place, but just four seconds out of second place. The only other Brandeis runner in the women's varsity race was junior Erin Bisceglia (Durham, Conn./Coginchaug), who finished in 14th place with a time of 18:30.

In the men's race, despite competing without several of their top runners, the 10th-ranked Brandeis men placed third overall, finishing just six points behind another nationally-ranked squad, No. 28 Keene State and three points behind MIT. Leading the way for the Brandeis men was junior Marc Boutin (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.), who covered the 8K distance with a time of 24:53, good for sixth place. Boutin finished 13 seconds out of first place and was among a pack of seven runners within five seconds of second place. Senior Devon Holgate (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) placed 11th with a time of 25:03, just one second out of a top-10 placement. Seniors Dan Anastos (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) and Kerwin Vega (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) also earned top-20 positions, coming 18th and 20th, respectively, with times of 25:12 and 25:20. With junior Chris Brown (No. Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) finishing 33rd in 25:38, Brandeis was the first team to get all of its scoring runners across the line. Sophomore Alex Kramer (No. Andover, Mass./No. Andover) was the team's sixth competitor, running in 90th place with a time of 26:50.

Brandeis's next meet is the Open New England Championships on Oct. 9 at Franklin Park in Boston.
