Q&A With Director of Athletics Lauren Haynie

Director of Athletics Lauren Haynie

Q: How did you get your start in collegiate athletics?

My start in collegiate athletics was really as an undergraduate athletic training student at Penn State. I loved my time there – the huge crowds, excitement, and the pride students and alumni have in the university and show through the support of their teams. While the stage is different in Division II and III, attending games and watching fans cheer on students pursuing their passions is still my favorite part of athletics.

Q: As a former athletic trainer, are there any lessons or habits that you take from that position that you can apply to being an athletic director?

As an athletic trainer, I learned to listen very well. It is incredibly important to me that I am fully present when I meet with people, listen to them, and pay attention to their body language. This does not mean that I always agree with the points raised, but that I have given time and consideration to the concerns being discussed.

Q: What has been the most surprising thing you've learned about Brandeis Athletics so far? About Brandeis University as a whole?

The most surprising, but positive thing I have learned about Brandeis Athletics is the commitment, whether it be from staff, coaches or student-athletes, to represent the department and university with pride. It has been refreshing to see so many people pursuing shared goals, no matter their roles.

As a university, Brandeis is a complex place, so I have been taking the time to meet as many people as I can so that I have a feel for the culture of the university. I believe that I did not have too many preconceived notions, so there haven't been very many surprises…but it's only been two months!

Lauren Haynie with Louie The Judge at Homecoming! Q: How would you compare Brandeis to your two previous institutions, MIT and Wellesley, both in terms of athletics and overall?

All three institutions commit not only to varsity athletics, but also strong intramurals, club sports, and recreational programming. I have also enjoyed the fact that each institution has demonstrated its commitment to wellness through a physical education/wellness requirement. Beyond what I have mentioned, however, the cultures of all three are very different, and we see this manifested in the students who choose to attend each of them.

Q: What's something we would be surprised to learn about you?

I love both college and professional football… but please do not take that to mean we are considering adding it here at Brandeis!

Q: What opportunities do you see for growth in Brandeis Athletics?

I see amazing opportunities for growth here – from reinvigorating and reimagining our facilities, finding ways to reconnect with alumni, and working as a group to enhance the student-athlete experience. My role is to find ways to cultivate resources that will make it possible for our staff, coaches, and student-athletes to be successful, both in terms of wins and losses and in their personal growth.

Q: What were your favorite moments of the first semester, either on or off the playing fields?

My favorite moments have been getting to know the wonderful staff and students here. The day that really stands out for me is Homecoming…we really did it all! From the 5K in the morning, alumni events throughout the day, Cordish Tennis Center Dedication, Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, and simply the buzz around our facilities – I ended the day a bit tired, but exhilarated by the enthusiasm I saw for Brandeis Athletics!

Q: What are you looking forward to in the next semester at Brandeis?

I am looking forward to continuing to be present and visible with our students and staff. Stopping by practices and going to games are my favorite parts of my role because I get to see student-athletes doing something that truly brings them joy.
