Baseball wins second-straight road contest, 7-4, at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (taken from a Springfield College press release) – The Brandeis offense pounded out 15 hits, led by 3-5 performances from DH Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.) and RF Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, N.Y.) as the Judges defeated Springfield College, 7-4, for their second road win in a row.

The (8-5) Judges jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off an RBI groundout by sophomore third baseman Malcolm Cone-Coleman (Portland, Maine). But the Pride (7-7) answered right back, tying the game up at one run apiece in the bottom of the second inning as senior third baseman Derek Yvon (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) scored on an RBI-single to left field by sophomore outfielder Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.)

Brandeis would never trail in the contest, as it went on to score two runs in the fourth, followed by one more in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. The big hit in the fourth inning for the Judges was produced by Cone-Coleman on an RBI single.

In the bottom of the fifth, Federico scored on a fielder’s choice by McCarthy to bring the Pride within two runs of the Judges. But a three-run rally by Brandeis in the top of the seventh increased the visitors’ lead to 7-2. The big hit in the seventh was a two-run triple by Zach Golden (Milton, Mass.).

SC threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Brandeis closer Aaron Landes (Southboro, Mass.) allowed just one run, ending any possible SC rally, and earning his first save of the season.

Brandeis starter Tyler Robinson (Manotick, Ont.), improved his record to 3-1 on the year, allowing just two earned runs over six innings, while striking out four and walking one. SC junior Derek Hodder (Hamden, Conn.) meanwhile lost his first game of the season, falling to 3-1. Hodder, however was able to give his bullpen a rest by pitching the nine-inning complete game.
