NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (courtesy UMass Dartmouth sports information)- The Brandeis baseball team got the second home run of the season from senior RF Kenny Destremps (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) and a 2-for-3 peformance with two runs and a double from sophomore LF Brian Ing (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich), but the Judges dropped their 11th straight game, 7-3, at UMass-Dartmouth today. 

Junior right-hander John Quigg (Weymouth, Mass./Archbishop Williams) limited the Judges to one run and three hits during 5 2/3 innings of relief and freshman third baseman Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) drove in four runs to lead the Corsairs.

Quigg relieved junior starter Tyler White (Westport, Mass./Westport) in the third inning and pitched into the eighth inning, when sophomore Tim Philips (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) replaced him with two outs.

Medeiros put UMass Dartmouth on top when he doubled home three runs with two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning.

Brandeis came back with a run in the top of the second on an error by shortstop John Granahan (Hanover, Mass./Hanover), but the Corsairs scored once in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman left fielder Jimmy Cranston (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and twice more in the sixth on junior catcher Matt Worden's (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) run-scoring double and an RBI single by Medeiros.

Senior designated hitter Dan DeMello (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) singled home a run in the seventh to extend the Corsairs' lead to 7-1. Destremps hit a solo homer in the eighth for Brandeis, his second of the season and the fourth of his career. Rookie shortstop Brian Allen (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) singled home a run in the ninth, but senior right-hander Pat Lavey relieved Phillips with two out and two on and struck out freshman pinch-hitter Zach Bardwell (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) to end the game.

Quigg earned the win to improve to 2-0, while sophomore Colin Markel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), who started for the Judges, took the loss and fell to 1-4. Markel went 5.1 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits, striking out three and walking two. 

UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-6 with the victory, while Brandeis fell to 5-19 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Bridgewater State Monday. The Judges will visit Tufts Tuesday.
