LAKE WALES, Fla. — The Brandeis University baseball team broke into the win column with a 12-2 win over Johnson (Fla.) University on Tuesday afternoon. Ten different Brandeis pounded out 19 hits, eight players had RBI and the Judges turned five double plays in the field to even their record at 1-1. Johnson, of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), falls to 2-10 on the campaign.

Leading the hit parade for Brandeis were sophomore CF Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn./Avon) and rookie 3B Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional), who were both 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. O'Connor, the leadoff hitter, added a walk and a sacrifice fly, producing Brandeis's second run of the game in the second inning. Heineman, hitting cleanup, also walked twice and scored what proved to be the winning run as part of Brandeis's four-run third inning.

Brandeis also had two hits each from junior 2B Rob Trenk (West Orange, N.J./West Orange); junior 1B Tom McCarthy (Yonkers, N.Y./Fieldston School); senior LF Brian Ing (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and sophomore RF Max Hart (Montville, Conn./Montville). Trenk and McCarthy also had two RBI on the day, joined by junior DH Kyle Brenner (Brookfield, Mass./St. Peter Marian), who had a two-run double in the Judges' five-run eighth inning, and junior SS Brian Allen (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic), who had an RBI single in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

The Brandeis offense came in support of a quintet of pitchers, with junior Brent Edmunds (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) earning the win. Edmunds gave up two runs on seven hits and walked three in his five innings of work, but induced four ground-ball double plays in that span. The Judges' bullpen was sparkling after that, not allowing a hit over the final four innings. Sophomores Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon), James Machado (Dracut, Mass./Dracut) and seniors Colin Markel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and Brian Ing allowed six baserunners on walks and hit batters, but only one got past second base. Ing ended the game on the team's fifth twin-killing, a line-drive to short.

Johnson's big hitters were catcher Dustin Lawson, who went 2-3 with a double, and reserve 1B Chase Hunt, who drove in the Suns' only runs in the fourth inning with a two-run single.
