SANFORD, Fla. – The Brandeis University baseball team had a strong finish to the 2015 University Athletic Association tournament, earning a second-straight win with a 12-8 triumph over Case Western Reserve University. The Judges finish the tourney with an overall record of 4-10, 2-6 in the UAA, while Case sees its record evened at 4-4 overall and in the conference.

The Judges finished with 10 hits, but also took advantage of the Spartans' pitchers issuing seven walks and fielders committing five errors, as just three of the 12 runs ended up being earned.

Sophomore catcher Connor Doyle (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) went just 1-for-4 on the afternoon, but drove in four runs, he plated a run with a groundout in the second inning, two more in the team's six-run third, and had a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Senior 1B Tom McCarthy (Yonkers, N.Y./Fieldston School) was 2-for-4 with a team-high three runs scored, walking once and driving in a run with a single in the third inning.

 That third frame was the big inning for the Judges, as they scored six runs on six hits and two costly Spartan errors. Two of the first three hitters reached base on an error and a single, while a wild pitch put runners on the corners with one away. The next five Brandeis hitters reached base safely, starting with RBI singles by rookie DH Ryan Pocock's (Westford, Mass./Westford) and McCarthy. A single loaded the bases, and Pocock scored when the ball was misplayed by the catcher for the third run of the frame. Doyle followed with his two-run single down the left-field line, and senior 2B Rob Trenk (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) followed to the same spot, making it an 8-1 lead for the Judges.

In the fourth, Brandeis scored three times without benefit of a hit. Case pitchers walked four of the first five hitters, issuing a bases-loaded free pass to sophomore 3B Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Reg.). An error on the pitcher allowed the second run of the frame score, and Heineman's fly ball to center produced a sacrifice fly.

Case clawed back into the game thanks to catcher Jordan Swisher, who went 5-for-5 with four RBI, a double and home run in the bottom of the ninth, when the Spartans scored three times to make it a 12-8 score, but it wasn't enough.

Brandeis sophomore Sam Miller (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) picked up his second win of the season after going eight innings. He struck out two and walked three, allowing five earned runs on 15 hits, but stranded 10 runners and got two double plays and one pick-off.
