Coppens named All-American

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University basketball senior Joe Coppens of Rockland, Mass., was recognized as an All-American for his fine seasons as a fourth-team selection by d3hoops.com.

Coppens had previously been named a first-team All-New England choice by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and second-team All-Region selection by d3hoops.com after his break-out senior campaign for the Brandeis men's basketball team. Coppens led the Judges in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game, and was second in rebounding with 5.2 boards per game. He led the team in scoring nine times this season and scored 20 or more points six times, including a career-high 37 points in a 96-94 win overtime win against Elms College on Jan. 7. Coppens finished the year ranked sixth in the University Athletic Association (UAA) in scoring. His 87.9% free-throw percentage was second in the league and 21st in all of Division III. He also averaged 33.66 minutes played per game, second-best in the league.

Coppens guided the Brandeis men to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III tournament and a single-season record 23 victories. Brandeis defeated Lasell College, 80-59, and Bowdoin College, 68-53, at home in the first two rounds of the tournament. In the Sweet 16, they topped sectional host Plattsburgh State University, 74-63, before falling to eventual national runners-up Amherst College, 65-55, in the Elite Eight.

Coppens concluded his career ranked 21st on Brandeis's all-time scoring list with 1,098 points. His 151 career 3-pointers rank fourth in school history. He is the Judges' first post-season d3hoops.com All-American – classmate Steve DeLuca was preseason selection this year before missing the season to injury - and their first by any organization since 1978, when Walter Harrigan '78 and John Martin '78 were NABC second-team All-Americans.

Coppens is a 2004 graduate of Rockland High School. He is the son Leo and Lynn Coppens, Rockland, Mass.
