WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball
team, ranked No. 2 in the nation in NCAA Division III, defeated
Curry College, 78-67, as the Judges outrebounded the visiting
Colonels, 54-22, in Red Auerbach Arena tonight.
Brandeis (9-1), which has won nine of its first 10 games for the
second year in a row, outscored Curry 28-6 on second-chance points.
The Judges pulled down 25 offensive rebounds, three more than
Curry's total on both ends of the floor.
The Judges never trailed in the game, opening on a hot streak,
hitting six of their first eight shots en route to an 18-8 lead
with just over eight minutes elapsed in the contest. The lead sat
between seven and 12 points for the rest of the first half as the
Judges took a 39-29 lead into the locker room. Brandeis then scored
the first 11 points of the second half, taking a 50-29 lead with
16:28 on the clock. Curry rallied and got as close as 10 points in
the final two minutes, but it was too little, too late.
Brandeis put four players in double figures, paced by junior Kevin
Olson (Rockport, Mass.), who had 16 points on six-of-11 shooting,
including three-of-six from beyond the arc. Senior guard Joe
Coppens (Rockland, Mass.) recorded his first collegiate
double-double with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, six
coming on the offensive glass. Sophomore forward Terrell Hollins
(Springfield, Mass.) added 14 points and nine boards, while senior
guard Florian Rexhepi (Skopje, Macedonia) came off the bench to hit
three 3-pointers and finish with 13 points. Rexhepi led a Brandeis
bench that outscored Curry's by a 23-5 margin. Senior Stephen Hill
(Brighton, Mass.) contributed to the Judges' board dominance with
10 rebounds (four offensive).
Curry (4-5) also had four players in double figures, led by senior
Johnathan Bowers (Kalamazoo, Mich.) with a game-high 19 points and
team-high nine rebounds. Classmate and guard Tim Hones (Brookline,
Mass.) added 18 points and a game-high seven assists. Senior James
Bartelle (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore Mark Mastrullo
(Billerica, Mass.) each hit three trifectas of their own to score
13 and 12 points, respectively. The Colonels outshot Brandeis, 46
percent to 44 percent, including a 54%-41% advantage in the second
half.
