ATLANTA, Ga. -- Sophomore guard Andre Roberson (Springfield, Mass.) came off the bench to score a career-high 29 points today to lead the visiting Brandeis University men's basketball team past Emory University, 89-81, in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest today. The win moves Brandeis to 14-4, 4-3 in the conference and moves them to within one game of first place in the UAA, as conference leaders Rochester and Washington University both lost today. Emory falls to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in the league.

Roberson scored 14 points in the first half and 15 in the second. He shot nine-of-11 from the floor, including two-of-three from 3-point range, and nine-of-11 from the line. Roberson outscored the Emory bench by himself, 29-18. Rookie Christian Yemga (Yaounde, Cameroon) also scored a career-high with 15 points off the bench. Senior guard Joe Coppens (Rockland, Mass.) added 16 points and junior Kevin Olson (Rockport, Mass.) had 15. Senior guard Kwame Graves-Fuglham (Amherst, Mass.) led all players with seven assists and four steals, while sophomore forward Terrell Hollins (Springfield, Mass.) had a team-high eight rebounds.

Emory was paced by a double-double performance from sophomore Anthony Fernandez, who scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Eagle senior Spiros Ferderigos, the leading scorer in the UAA, tallied 20 points, while junior John Kresse had 13. Both Ferderigos and Kresse each had six assists to lead the hosts.

In the first half of the contest, the game was tied at 22-22 with 10:33 remaining. Emory went on a 10-1 run over the next six minutes to take their biggest lead of the game, 32-23, on a Kresse trifecta with 6:54 left before the break. The Judges rallied, however, outscoring Emory, 22-11, the rest of the way to take a 45-43 lead into the locker room. Brandeis took the lead on back-to-back lay-ups by Yemga and Roberson off their full-court pressure.

The Judges opened the second half by scoring the first 11 points to give themselves some breathing room. After a Stephen Hill (Brighton, Mass.) lay-up, Brandeis connected on three straight 3-pointers, one by Coppens and two by Olson. The last of those gave Brandeis a 56-43 lead with just under four minutes gone in the frame. The lead was still 10, 65-55, after a Roberson lay-up with 10:49 to go when Emory made its last push. The Eagles scored 12 of the 16 points, closing to within 69-67 on a Fernandez lay-up on a feed from Ferderigos with 7:47 left. Brandeis answered with seven straight points to go ahead by nine, 76-67, with 5:01 on the clock and were able to hold the Eagles at bay from there.
