LEICESTER, Mass. (courtesy Becker sports information) --- Junior guard Derek Retos (No. Attleboro, Mass./No. Attleboro) scored 20 of his 23 points in the second half while shooting 7-of-11 from downtown to lead Brandeis University to a 77-62 win over host Becker College in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday at the Leicester Gym. The Judges of Brandeis are now 5-1 on the season while the Hawks of Becker fall to 2-4. 

All seven of Retos's field goals for the game came from behind the arc, with six of those coming after the break. A year ago, he torched the Hawks for a career-high 28 points on eight trifectas. Junior center Youri Dascy (Fall River, Mass./St. Andrews School, R.I.) contributed 12 points, four rebounds and a block, making all five of his shots. Junior guard Gabriel Moton (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg) added 12 points with eight rebounds and five assists. Junior forward Alex Stoyle (Goffstown, N.H./Tilton School) also pulled down eight boards, while freshman forward Kevin Trotman (Bristol, Conn./Taft School) had a career-best eight points off the bench.

Becker was led by junior guard Tyler Roberson (Irvington, N.J.) with a game-high 26 points, hitting five-of-six from behind the arc, and racking up five steals. Junior guard Mike Russell (East Hampton, N.Y.) finished with 20 points, making seven of his ten shots, tallying six assists and three steals. But the remainder of the team could account for only 16 points. Free-throwing shooting didn't help Becker, as they made only six-of-13 shots from the line while Brandeis shot 79.3 percent on 29 attempts.

The action was fast-paced early on, with the Judges jumping out to a six point lead after two free throws by junior guard Ben Bartoldus (Hillsborough, N.H./Proctor Acad.) at 11-5. The Hawks responded with a 12-4 run to take the lead, capped off by a layup from Roberson. Becker used superb three-point shooting in the first half to offset Brandeis' size advangtage, burying five of their first eight shots from beyond the arc, with Roberson accounting for three of those buckets. The Judges pounded the ball inside, getting in front again behind the play of Dascy who lead his team with ten points in the first half. The Hawks tied it up at 27-27 with 2:56 left in the first half when sophomore guard Lee Brockett (Waterbury, Conn.) found freshman forward Rashaun Liggon (Elizabeth, N.J.) for an alley-oop dunk, thrilling the Becker faithful. But Brandeis closed out the half outscoring Becker 5-1 to take a 32-28 lead into halftime. The Judges dominated on the boards in the opening period, 24-14, while the Hawks had eight steals against only one for the visitors.

The second half opened much the same way, with Brandeis playing strong inside and Becker staying in the game with another three by Roberson. Back to back layups by Russell gave the Hawks the lead for the first time in the period, but the Judges quickly answered with a three by Trotman. Retos hit 3-pointers on three straight Brandeis possessions, and the visitors started to pull away. The long-range shooting bonanza sparked a 16-6 run by the Judges, giving them a 53-43 lead with 10:32 remaining on the clock, their largest lead of the game up to that point. Brandeis wouldn't let up, leading by as much as 16 after a dunk by Trotman with 4:45 left in the game.

Brandeis travels to Lasell for their next game, also on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
