WALTHAM, Mass. — Three Brandeis University student-athletes have been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 5. Senior Michael Arguello of Brentwood, Tenn., was honored for men's tennis, while sophomore Joanne Carminucci of Brewster, N.Y., and rookie Ian Quin of Ramsey, N.J., were recognized for women's and men's fencing.

Arguello helped the #32 Brandeis men upend #30 Stevens Institute of Technology, 8-1, in their first home match of the season on Saturday, March 4. The Judges won two of three doubles matches, with Arguello and classmate Brian Granoff of Miami, Fla., taking an 8-3 decision at No. 1. In singles action, Arguello had the match-clinching singles win at No. 1, winning a marathon, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) over the Ducks' Danny Polk. Overall this spring, Arguello is 2-3 in dual matches. He was ranked #16 in the nation at the end of the fall season. The Judges return to action this Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. against UAA rival NYU.

Carminucci and Quin helped the Brandeis fencing team earn its first New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference championship since 2014 on Saturday at the University of Vermont as both won individual gold medals.

Carminucci finished the day with four different first-place finishes. In addition to the overall six-weapon team championship, Brandeis claimed the three-weapon women's crown and the women's foil title. Carminucci went on to win first place in the individual foil competition, going 12-1 in the team competition to help her squad to a five-point margin of victory over Vassar, 33-28. That qualified Carminucci for the individual bracket, where she went 3-2 in pool play to earn the sixth seed in the direct elimination. Carminucci faced the top three seeds in the bracket, defeating Juliet Hewes of Tufts, 15-9, in the quarterfinals; Sophia Russo of MIT, 15-6, in semis; and Jesicca Li, also of the Engineers, 15-11, in the finals to take the crown. This is her fourth career UAA Fencer of the Week award.

Quin led the men's foil squad to second place in the individual standings by posting a 10-1 record in team competition as the Judges finished one point behind Vassar, 29-28. Quin reached the individual competition and, like his teammate on the women's side, went 3-2 to claim the sixth seed. After knocking off BC's Zach Hammer, 15-10, in the opening round, Quin faced junior teammate Elishua Litle of Haifa, Israel, in the semifinals and edged his counterpart, 15-13. In the finals, Quin met Sacred Heart's Tyler Endee and picked up a 15-10 win to claim gold.

Brandeis fencing will compete on Sunday at Yale University in the NCAA Northeast Regionals hoping to earn berths at the NCAA National Collegiate Championships March 23-26 in Indianapolis.
