Boutin, Kostel earn UAA Player of the Week honors

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University junior Marc Boutin of Westford, Mass., of the men's cross country team and senior Stephen Kostel of New Hyde Park, N.Y., of the men's soccer squad have been selected as the Judges' first two University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for 2010.

Boutin, a two-time All-New England performer for the Judges, earned weekly UAA cross country honors for the first time in his career. He guided coach John Evans' team to third place overall at the 2010 UMass Dartmouth Shriners' Invitational on Sept. 18. Boutin covered the 8K course in 24:53, good for sixth place overall. He was just 13 seconds out of first place in a group of seven runners separated by five seconds. Running without 2009 All-American senior Paul Norton of Amherst, Mass., the Judges (ranked first in New England, 10th in Division III) finished in third place at the meet with 79, just six points behind Keene State (3rd in New England, tied for 28th in DIII) and three points behind MIT (fourth in New England, unranked nationally).

Kostel, a reserve midfielder for head coach Mike Coven's men's soccer team, had a career week, sharing UAA Offensive Player of the Week honors with NYU's Paolo Luciano. Kostel had a goal and three assists as the Judges went 2-0. In a 4-1 win over WPI on Sept. 14, Kostel matched his career total with three assists. He had helpers on each of the Judges' three second-half goals, including the game-winner in the 69th minute. Just before halftime of Brandeis's 13-0 rout of Newbury College in the rain on Sept. 16, Kostel scored his first collegiate goal. His four assists on the season are tied for second-most in the UAA.  At 6-0, the Judges have now matched their win total from 2009. They are on their longest winning streak since 2000 and off to their best start since 1985.

Boutin is a 2008 graduate of Westford Academy. He is the son of George and Grace Boutin, Westford, Mass.

Kostel is a 2007 graduate of Archbishop Molloy High School. He is the son of Andrew and Janette Kostel, New Hyde Park, N.Y.
