WALTHAM, Mass.- The 23rd- ranked Brandeis men's soccer team (3-0) won for the 7th straight match dating back to last season with a 7-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College (1-2) in the Judges' home opener. Junior defender Ben Applefield (Avon, Conn./ Avon) led the way with the first goal of the game and an assist in the second half, while rookie forward Chris Bradley (East Brunswick, N.J./ East Brunswick) added his first two career goals to propel the Judges to the win.

In the first half, Brandeis took advantage of a costly foul by the Chargers right outside the 18 set up a free kick. Applefield took advantage by blasting the ball into the left-hand corner past the diving keeper in the 17th minute. Senior forward Lee Russo (Westford, Mass./ Westford Acad.) continued the Judges' onslaught in the 24th minute when he headed in a bouncing ball off a cross from classmate Sam Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass./ North Attleboro). To finish off the first half scoring, Bradley ran onto a perfect ball from Russo, got past the last defender and goalie, and slotted the ball into the open net in the 36th minute. Colby-Sawyer was never able to get much pressure on Brandeis, as they only managed two shots in the half and junior netminder Blake Minchoff (Fiskdale, Mass./ Tantasqua Reg.) was called on for just one save to preserve the shutout.

The Judges did not slow down once the second half began. In the 61st minute, another Ocel cross found its way onto junior midfielder Kyle Feather's (Pineville, N.J./ Montville Township) head and past the keeper for a 4-0 lead. Just six minutes later, sophomore forward Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass./ Nauset Reg.) made a run through the right side of the field, received a great pass from Feather, and blasted the shot across his body into the lower left hand corner of the net. In the 75th minute, rookie defender Connor Lanahan (Avon, Conn./ Avon) took advantage of a terrific ball from Applefield and gave Brandeis a 6-0 lead. Finally,  the 83rd minute, Bradley was at again when he ran onto a through ball from sophomore midfielder Gustavo Lopes (Methuen, Mass./ Tilton School) just inside the box and scored past the diving goalie for the second time to end the scoring at 7-0.

The Chargers played better in the back end of the second half, led by rookie forward Lukas Welch (Northfield, N.H./ Winnesquam) and sophomore forward Max Yee (Hooksett, N.H./ Manchester Central) who combined for five of the team's seven shots including all three of their shots on goal. Between Minchoff and sophomore goalie Joe Graffy (Concord, N.H./ Concord) who recorded two saves, Brandeis kept the visitors off the scoreboard.

The Judges face Clark University at home on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in their next match while Colby-Sawyer also plays on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at home against Amherst College.
