WALTHAM, Massachusetts — The Brandeis University men's soccer team, ranked No. 9 in the nation in Division III, got their season off to a fine start thanks to senior midfielder Josh Ocel (No. Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Acad.), who had a hand in each goal in a 3-1 win over John Carroll University on the first day of the Brandeis Invitational, presented by the Park Lodge Group

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Ocel opened the scoring in the ninth minute, when his free kick from a couple of yards outside the left corner of the 18-yard box bounded along the ground and scooted through a scrum and past a screened goalkeeper. 
• The Blue Streaks equalized in the 33^rd minute when junior Jesse Marinaro (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunwick) headed home a free kick from rookue Hayden Parente (Medina, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius).
• The game-winning goal game in the 51^st minute when Ocel's corner was headed home by junior midfielder Patrick Flahive (Chatham, Ill./Worcester Acad.).
• Ocel added an insurance goal in the 63^rd minute when he was pulled down inside the box and buried the ensuing penalty kick.
  
  

OCEL'S BIG DAY

• Ocel, an NSCAA and D3Soccer.com All-American last year, recorded a career-high with his five-point performance.
• It was the second time in his career he was involved in three goals in a game, after a two-assist, one-goal performance as a sophomore against Clark University.
• Ocel had four previous games in which he was involved in multiple goals, but this is the first time he has scored twice.
• The assist was the 20^th of Ocel's career, making him the 14^th player in school history to reach the milestone.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Brandeis outshot JCU, 12-8, including 6-3 in the second half.
• The Judges had nine corners to the Blue Streaks' six.
• Brandeis junior Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) recorded two saves in the winning effort, while John Carroll sophomore Liam McIntosh (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) had three stops in the loss.

• Tomorrow, John Carroll takes on Western New England University at 1:30 p.m. followed by the marquis matchup of the tournament between #9 Brandeis and #6 Haverford College.
• Haverford defeated WNEU, 5-0, today, as Ben Field match Ocel with two goals and an assist, with all three coming in a five-minute span of the first half.
