GENEVA, New York — The fourth-ranked Brandeis University men's soccer team had its valiant comeback attempt fall just short against the Cortland Red Dragons, as the Judges fell, 3-2, after falling behind by three goals in the 74th minute. The game was the first game of the season-opening Hobart Invitational for both teams; Brandeis falls to 0-1, while Cortland starts off its season 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Red Dragons scored the lone goal of the first half in the 27th minute, when Migell Ormsby received a short pass from Jake Keller, faked a shot at the top of the box, and scored into the left side of the goal.

• In the 50th minute Keller needed no assisting as he put one home to make it 2-0.

• The 74th minute saw a lot of action; at 73:02 Michael Miner made it 3-0 when he headed one into the goal off of a cross from Garrett Sweeney, but just 16 seconds later junior Andrew Allen (Norfolk, Mass. / King Phillip Regional) drilled a goal from the top of the box to cut the Cortland lead to 3-1.

• The second Brandeis goal came out of a flurry after a corner in the 86th minute. Senior Patrick Flahive (Chatham, Ill. / Worcester Acad.) pushed the ball up to classmate Mike Lynch (Weymouth, Mass. / Weymouth) at the top of the box, and Lynch scored to cut the lead to 3-2.

• The Judges managed one more shot after that, with Cortland keeper Connor Young making his ninth and final save of the game in the 88th minute.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Brandeis outshot Cortland 18-17, but was much more accurate, putting 11 of those shots on goal to the Red Dragons' 5.

• Senior keeper Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn. / Suffield) made two saves on five shots for the Judges.

• The loss was the Judges' first season-opening defeat since 2004, when they fell to Endicott College, 2-1.

• Brandeis rounds out the Hobart Invitational tomorrow, playing host Hobart at 3:30

• Cortland also plays its second game of the Invitational tomorrow, squaring up against Eastern Connecticut State at 1 o'clock.
