DeNight is all right as men's soccer tops Roger Williams, 1-0, in season opener

Will DeNight '23 scores game-winning goal

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team opened its 2019 season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Roger Williams University as part of the Brandeis Classic. The Judges improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 1-0.

The game's lone goal came in the 29th minute from a Judge rookie, forward Will DeNight (Miami, Fla. / MAST Academy). After an RWU clearing attempt into the box failed, DeNight hammered an initial shot toward the visitors' goal. It was blocked by a Hawk defender, but DeNight was able to slip the ball past RWU senior goalkeeper Edward Geschickter (Brookline, Mass./Brookline).

The Judges were able to control play for the remaining 60 minutes of action, limiting RWU to 10 shots, five on goal. Brandeis senior Greg Irwin (Passaic, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) made all five saves to earn his seventh career shutout. Geschickter had four saves in the losing effort, while RWU senior back Nicholas Sanchez prevented an early Brandeis goal when he cleared a shot by junior Noah Gans (Newton, Mass./Newton South) off the line.

Brandeis outshot Roger Williams, 17-10, for the game, although the Hawks owned a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Judges will meet Washington and Lee University tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. The Generals defeated William Paterson, 4-0, in today's opening contest, with four different goal scorers. Roger Williams will take on William Paterson in tomorrow's first match at 4:00 p.m.
