Fabian wins three races as swimmers open season at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. -- The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams opened their 2013-14 seasons today at Wheaton College. The Judges suffered a 183-86 loss on the men's side and a 187-53 defeat on the women's. Brandeis competitors turned in seven individual victories on the afternoon.

Leading the way was junior Max Fabian (Keene, N.H./Oak Meadow), who had three wins. Fabian was his usual outstanding self in the distance freestyle events, winning the 500-yard free in 5:02.64 and the 1,000 in 10:14.87. The latter win came by nearly 40 full seconds over the next swimmer from Wheaton. Fabian also added a two-second win in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.08.

Brandeis's other winner on the men's side was sophomore Brian Luk (Hong Kong/Northfield Mount Hermon). Competing in the freestyle sprints, Luk won the 100 free with a time of 48.92 seconds. He also came in second in the 50 with a time of 22.47 seconds.

On the women's side, the Judges also found success in the distance freestyle. Rookie Joanna Murphy (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) made her collegiate debut with a pair of wins. She took the 1,000 free by 43 seconds with a time of 11:03.71, while taking the 500 by 16 seconds with a mark of 5:34.35. 

Junior Gabby Drillich (Harrington Park, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) added the team's final win on the day in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:36.03,  a margin of six seconds. Sophomore Fallon Bushee (Malden, Mass. / Mystic Valley Regional Charter Sch.) had a pair of second-place finishes in the sprints, posting times of 26.26 seconds in the 50 free and 58.14 in the 100. 

The Judges return to action next weekend at the UAA Invitational at Rochester.
