WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis swimming and diving teams traveled across Waltham tonight to face off against rival Bentley University. The Judges suffered a pair of losses, with the men dropping a 152-83, while the women fell, 148-79.
Junior Max Fabian (Keene, N.H./Oak Park) was a double-winner on the men's side once again. He won the 1,000-meter freestyle. With a time of 10:12.04, he won the event by a margin of more than 45 seconds. In the 500 free, Fabian established a record for the Brandeis-Bentley meet, breaking the five-minute barrier for the first time against the Falcons with a time of 4:58.07, seven seconds ahead of second place. Fabian also placed third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:08.51.
Sophomore Brian Luk (Hong Kong / Northfield Mount Hermon) added a win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.43 seconds, a margin of 0.21 seconds. Luk was also the runner-up in the 200 freestyle (1:48.51) and the 100 free (50.59 seconds) and third in the 50 free (22.79 seconds).
Rookie Edan Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) was third in two races, the 100-yard backstroke (58.72 seconds) and the 100 IM (59.24 seconds). He was also fourth in the 200 back (2:07.00).
On the women's side, rookie Joanna Murphy (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) had the team's top performance with a pair of wins and a second-place finish. Murphy captured the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:03.50 by about more than a second and a half, and came back to also take the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.75, winning by a margin of nearly 14 seconds. Her runner-up came in the 100 free with a time of 57.44 seconds, 0.84 seconds off the winning pace.
Sophomore Fallon Bushee (Malden, Mass. / Mystic Valley Regional Charter Sch.) added a runner-up performances in the 50 free in 27.05 seconds and in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:07.89 seconds. Classmate Theresa Gaffney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) added a third-place finish in the 1,000 free in 12:13.94.
The Judges are back in action in two weeks at the WPI Invitational.
