Swimmers compete against UAA foe Rochester, D1 Canisius

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Brandeis swimming and diving team traveled to western New York over the weekend to take on UAA rivals Rochester on Friday afternoon, then faced both the Yellowjackets and Division I Canisius on Saturday morning. The Judges were defeated in all three meets, but had several big individual performances.

FRIDAY VS ROCHESTER

Men, L, 82-183

Top performances from Brandeis on Friday tallied 13 second-place finishes. Topping the list for the men was rookie Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset). The New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Swimmer of the Week last week, Zitelny placed second three times: individually in the 100 fly (54.05 seconds) and 100 IM (56.88 seconds) and leading off the 200 medley relay. Along with rookie Jake Avery (Harwich Port, Mass./Nauset Regional), junior Eb Weber (Murray, Kentucky/Murray), and senior Cameron Braz (Monson, Mass./Monson), the team posted a time of 1:41.88.

 

Zitelny's older brother, Edan Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset), a senior, also had a pair of second-place finishes, in the 100 Back (57.50 seconds) and the 50 fly (24.77 seconds).

 

Junior diver Sam Zucker (Omaha, Neb./Anderson) was 2nd on the one-meter board (209.47) and at three meters (220.28).

 

Rookie Noah Ayers (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) was second in the 500 free (5:07.64), while junior Taku Harada (Henrico, Va./Mill E Godwin) was third in the 200 free (1:51.20).

 

Women, L, 62-213

Sophomore Kylie Herman (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) had two individual second-place finishes in the 100 free (56.72 seconds) and the 200 free (2:00.80). She also took third place in the 500 free (5:21.09).

Rookie Natalya Wozab (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) swam second in both breaststroke events, swimming 34.05 seconds in the 50 and 1:13.81 in the 100.  ClassmateHwanee Park (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) earned second place in the 50 butterfly in 28.04 seconds, while junior Amy Sheinheit (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) was third in the 50 back in 30.46 seconds.

 

The women also had two runner-up relays. The 200 free relay of Herman, junior Abby Damsky(New York, N.Y./Brearley School), rookie Mia Dorris (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and Sheinheit swam 1:48.34. IN the 200 medley relay, it was rookie Phillippa Zheku (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial) leading off, followed by Wozab, Park and Dorris who turned in a time of 1:56.15.

 

SATURDAY

 

 Scoring opportunities were harder to come by on Saturday when Division I Canisius was added to the mix.

Tamir Zitelny continued his terrific rookie season the next day with three more runner-up finishes. He touched second in the 100 butterfly (53.30 seconds), the 200 fly (2:00.86) and the 200 backstroke (2:01.30).

 

Harada added a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:52.70), while Ayers was fourth in the 500 free (5:07.60).

 

The 200 free relay team of rookie Junhan Lee (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill), Ayers, Weber and rookie Thomas Alger (Plymouth, Mass./Sacred Heart) came in fifth in 1:34.49, while the 400 medley relay of Tamir Zitelny, Avery, Edan Zitelny and Braz were fifth in 3:47.65.

On the women's side, Herman had three top-four performances. She was third in the 200 freestyle (2:02.01) and in the 400 individual medley (4:54.73) and fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:22.52).

Wozab turned in two fourth-place finishes in the breaststroke, going 1:13.82 in the 100 and 2:40.73 in the 200.

Park had the team's final top-three finish, taking third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.65.

The women's top relay was the 400 medley squad made up of Zheku, Wozab, Park and Herman, who were fifth in 4:19.13.
