WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University swimming and diving team member Sam Dienstag of Wilmette, Illinois, has been named a second-team All-American by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches of America.

In the Judges' only intercollegiate meet of the season on April 2 against Bentley University, Dienstag broke the school record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:32.94. That time was four seconds faster than the mark set in 2020 by Daniel Wohl '21 and ranked 10th in Division III this season, earning Dienstag second-team All-America honors.

"Sam has a determination during practice that makes others stop what they are doing to watch," said head coach Nicole Carter, who recently completed her third season with the Judges. "I think one thing that helped Sam this year was his ability to learn to communicate with his coaches, try new things and become disciplined in the development of his strengths but weaknesses as well. That growth and trust are going to take him to the levels we all know he can achieve. We are all very proud of Sam. He believes in his teammate and in Brandeis Swimming and has set the bar for years to come."

Dienstag is Brandeis's first swimming and diving All-American since Chris Pai '07 in 2004. He is just the fourth male in school history to earn swimming and diving All-America honors and the fourth swimmer, joining Pai on the men's side and Wendy Lowengrub '90 and Maya Marx '04 for the women.

Dienstag also set two more school records at the Judges' intrasquad meet on April 3, swimming 9:28.53 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 15:40.19 in the 1,650 free. Both marks erased records set by Max Fabian '15 in 2015, by 15 and 26 seconds, respectively. Both times were the fourth-fastest in Division III this past season and would have been eligible for All-America honors had they been posted during an intercollegiate meet instead of an intrasquad affair.

Dienstag is a 2020 graduate of New Trier High School.
