Swimming splits at Keene State

KEENE, N.H. – The Brandeis swimming and diving teams swam against the Keene State College Owls on Saturday afternoon. The Judges won a total of 14 individual events on the day. The men's team brought home the victory by a score of 156-101, while the women's team fell by a score of 140-129.

On the men's side, the surprise performer of the day was first-year Fischer Caplin (Park City, Utah / Park City). Caplin took the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:11.79 and placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:43.22, both personal bests. Senior Brendon Lu (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) and junior James Barno (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) also brought home victories for the men's team. Lu won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.29 and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.31. Barno won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.80 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.16. Lu and Barno also team up with senior Benton Ferebee (Germantown, Tenn. / Memphis University School) and junior Ryan Schulken (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge) to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.02.

On the women's side, the top performer was junior Bailey Gold (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston). Gold won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:12.99 and the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:43.39, the second-fastest time in Brandeis history. Sophomore Monica Iizuka (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) added wins in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.47 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.95, tying with junior Ema Rennie (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Scioto). First-year Aubrey Cheng (Anchorage, Alaska / South Anchorage) won the 50-yard freestyle with a 26.36 and placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.47. Gold, Iizuka, and Rennie teamed up with first-year Chloe Gonzalez (Miami Beach, Fla. / Miami Beach Senior) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.42.

The Judges return to action Friday, January 28 for their senior meet, a rematch against the Gordon College Scots.
