Men's tennis places sixth at UAA Tournament

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team rolled into the fifth-place match at the 2016 University Athletic Association championships with a 7-2 win over Rochester in the consolation semifinals, but the #23 Judges couldn't quite pull and upset against #6 Case Western Reserve, as they dropped a 5-4 decision to finish in sixth place.

Against Rochester, the Judges were sharp in doubles action, taking a 3-0 lead, after a shakeup in the team's regular pairings. Juniors Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) and Ryan Bunis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Groton-Dunstable, Mass.) won, 8-4 at No. 1. The No. 2 and 3 matches were decided by identical 8-3 scores, with senior Danny Lubarsky (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) and junior Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) winning at No.2 and junior Jeffrey Cherkin (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and rookie Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) winning at No. 3.

Granoff, Arguello and Ng followed up their doubles wins with straight-set wins in singles. Granoff took a 6-4, 6-3, victory at No. 2; Arguello was a 6-1, 6-3, winner at No. 3; and Ng won 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4. Bunis closed out the Brandeis scoring at No. 1 with a fine three-set win, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7, in a super-tiebreaker in the third.

Against Case Western Reserve in the final match of the tournament, the Judges were unable to take any points in doubles action, as the same three duos dropped three narrow matches. The two top spots each lost by 8-5 scores on late breaks of serve, while No. 3 was decided by a 9-7 score.

Brandeis rallied in singles action, winning four of the six matches in straight sets. Granoff earned a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2, while Arguello was a 6-3, 6-3, winner at No. 3. Ng won a 6-4, 6-2, matchup at No. 4 and Lubarsky took a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 5. The Judges couldn't pull out the match, however, as Bunis dropped a 6-2, 6-1, decision at the top spot and rookie Jackson Kogan (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Windward School) fell 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6.

The Judges wrap up the UAA tournament with a 9-9 overall record. They will play two more non-conference matches next week against MIT on Thursday at 3 p.m. and Wesleyan University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
