Ng and Chen win Wallach 'A' doubles title

LEWISTON, Maine – For the second year in a row, the Brandeis men's tennis team won the 'A' doubles flight at Bates College's James Wallach Invitational.

This year, the winning tandem was senior Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) and rookie Jeffrey Chen (Northfield, Ill. / New Trier). The duo defeated Ruparel and Fung from Amherst in the first round, 8-6, then outlasted Davis and Quijano from host Bates, 8-7 (9-7), in the quarterfinals on Saturday to advance to Sunday's semifinal round. In the semis, the Judges stunned the ITA Regional champions Wang and Jiang from Bowdoin, 8-6, to reach the finals. In the championship round, they defeated Wei and Bessette from Amherst College, 8-5, to claim the title. Last season, junior David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park), who is abroad this semester, and sophomore Anupreeth Cormutla (Monroe Township, N.J./Phillips Andover) won the Wallach 'A' doubles title. Sophomores Rajan Vohra (Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) and Nikhil Das (Smithfield, R.I. / Moses Brown School) reached the second round of the tournament with an 8-3 win over Tracy and DeCelis from Wheaton before falling to Wei and Bessette, 8-1.

Chen also had the Judges' top singles performance, reaching the semifinals of the 'B' flight. He defeated Ross DeRose of Trinity in the second round, 6-3, 6-2, after earning a bye. After knocking off Larry Zhao of Bowdoin, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, in the quarters, he pushed eventual champion Zach Bessette of Amherst to the limit before falling in a third-set super-tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-6.

Das and Coramutla represented Brandeis in the 'A' singles flight, with each winning a match. Das defeated Josh Quijano of the host Bobcats, 3-6, 6-2, 10-3, before falling to eventual champion Scott Altmeyer of Colby, 6-2, 6-2. Coramutla defeated Colby's Sumukh Pathi, 3-6, 6-1, 10-3, but fell to the other finalist, Kevin Ma of Amherst, 6-1, 6-1.

Also in the 'B' flight, Vohra knocked off Jeremiah Ryser of Wheaton, 6-4, 6-4, before falling to Amherst's Jayson Fung, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.

In 'C' flight action. Ng defeated Charlie Kilborn of Trinity, 6-0, 6-3, but fell in the quarterfinals to Damien Ruparel of Amherst in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.

In the 'D' flight, both Brandeis players won a first-round match, with junior Benjamin Wolfe (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) defeating Cole Wells of Trinity, 6-3, 6-0, and sophomore Ben Maffa (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) taking down Yuqi Wang of Skidmore, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

The Judges are back in action next weekend at home with the Tufts/Deis Invitational to wrap up their fall schedule.
