#14 Judges drop UAA opener to #6 WashU, 5-1

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Brandeis University men's tennis team opened the 2022 University Athletic Association tournament today with a 5-1 loss at the hands of Washington University at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The 14th-ranked Judges fall to 10-6, while the #6 Bears improve to 13-8.

The Judges' lone point came at #2 doubles, where junior Hunter Levine (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) and sophomore Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) were 8-5 winners over WashU's Jeremy Ouyang and Scott Yamamoto. The Bears won 8-5 at #3 and took a narrow 8-6 win at #1. 

In singles action, WashU's Jared Phillips knocked off Brandeis junior Simon Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette), 6-2, 6-1, at #5. The Bears then won matches at #2 and #4 by identical 6-2, 6-4, scored to close out the match. Gaurav Singh defeated Brandeis senior Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc./James Madison Memorial) at #4, while Daniel Li topped senior Jeffrey Chen (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) at #2 to clinch the victory.

Brandeis will meet Rochester in the UAA tournament consolation bracket tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. The Judges defeated the Yellowjackets, 7-2, earlier this season.
