Asante, Kern lead men at Poyau Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – At their only home meet of the season, the Brandeis men's indoor track and field both placed fifth out of eight squads at the 2012 Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational in the Gosman Athletic Center tonight totaling 55 points.

Leading the way for the Judges was junior Vincent Asante (Bronx, N.Y./High School for the Arts, Imagination and Inquiry) who won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.52 seconds. Asante ran a 6.55 in the prelims and then set a personal record in the finals. His time translates to 7.01 seconds in the 60-meter dash, ranking him sixth in the nation in Division III in the event at the moment. Asante also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.21 seconds.

The Judges had two second-place finishes on the men's side in distance events. Senior Alex Kramer (No. Andover, Mass./No. Andover) was second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:37.93, while classmate Mik Kern (Groton, N.Y./Groton) was second in the mile run with a time of 4:24.22. Kern's time in the mile is the third-fastest in Division III this season, with Kramer's time from a week earlier the fastest. Sophomore Greg Bray (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) placed sixth in the mile in 4:33.54, ranking 15th in Division III.

Adding a third-place finish for the Brandeis men was rookie Matthew Becker (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:26.73. Classmates Carl Lieberman (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and Liban Aden (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) were fourth in the 800- and 1,000-meter runs, respectively, with times of 2:04.22 and 2:47.66.

In field events, Brandeis got two points from junior Kensai Hughes (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), who was fifth in the long jump (19 feet, 3 ¾ inches), and from rookie Adam Berger (Concord, N.H./Concord), who was sixth in both the long jump (18 feet, 5 ¾ inches) and triple jump (40 feet, 4 ¾ inches).
