Judges Compete at the Yellow Jacket Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Kelsey Whitaker (Kingston, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.) and senior Amelia Lundkvist (So. Portland, Maine/Cheverus) grabbed the top two spots in the 1500-meter run, pacing the Brandeis men's and women's track teams at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday.

The meet, which was held at American International College, featured a mix of runners from Divisions I, II and III.

The only scoring result on the men's side came from rookie Mark Franklin (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Acad.), who tied for ninth in the high jump with a height of five feet, eight inches.

Junior Mohamed Sidique (Harlem, N.Y./St. Raymond H.S. for Boys) finished 11th in the long jump, third in Division III, with a length of 21 feet. Sophomore Adam Berger (Concord, N.H./Concord) and Franklin were 30th and 41st, respectively, in the event.

Berger's distance of 19' 6" was a new career best. He also was ninth in the triple jump and 30th in the 100-meter dash.

On the track side, rookies Nick Wactor (Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce) and Jeremy Wilson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) both had excellent showings in the 200 and 400. Wactor was 21st in the 200 with a career-best time of 23.26 seconds, while Wilson placed 39th. They were 32nd and 52nd, respectively, in the 400.

Three runners competed in the men's 1500. Sophomore Grady Ward (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) led the way with a time of 4:06.59, good for 16th. Rookie Quinton Hoey (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) was 20th, while classmate Matt Doran (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) was 42nd.

In the 400 meter hurdles, sophomores Trevor Tuplin (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and Brandon Odze (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) placed 18th and 27th, respectively.

The men's team also fielded two relay teams at AIC. The 4x100 squad placed 15th, while the 4x400 team finished in 12th.

 

Whitaker and Lundkvist dominated their only event of the day. Whitaker took first with a time of 4:41.39, while Lundkvist finished in 4:45.98, nearly three seconds ahead of a Division I runner in third place. Whitaker set a new career best, while both times qualified for the ECAC Championship.

The Judges had three other runners in the 1500 field. Sophomore Maggie Hensel (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and rookie Maddie Dollins (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) finished in 19th and 22nd, respectively, out of 91 competitors. Sophomore Molly Paris (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) placed 60th.

Rookie Ashley Hebard (Pasadena, Calif./Westridge) competed in two track events for the Judges. She took 35th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:10.56. Hebard was 63rd in the 200.

Two Brandeis women competed in the field events. Sophomore Ashley Klein (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) was 13th in the javelin with a distance of 93 feet, eight inches. Rookie Selena Livas (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) placed 20th in the javelin.

 

Overall, the 18 points that Whitaker and Lundkvist earned placed the Judges 14th out of 20 attending schools on the women's side. The Brandeis men finished in 20th.

Both teams will compete in the Springtime Invitational at Brown University on Saturday.
