WALTHAM, Mass. – At their annual home meet, the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational, the Brandeis track and field teams saw one school record broken as they won six individual events and finished second in a host of others. Both Brandeis squads finished in second place in the team standings.

Highlighting the string of wins was rookie Sonali Anderson (Fayetteville, Ga./Whitewater), who broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles for the second-straight meet. After just missing lowering her mark by three-hundredths of a second in the prelims with a time of 9.65 seconds, Anderson earned the top seed into the finals. In the finals, she jumped out to a lead and just edged runner-up Sydney Hurwitz of Bentley by 0.002 seconds, 9.471 seconds to 9.473 seconds. Anderson also contributed points with a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.34 seconds.

The Brandeis women got wins from sisters Emily Bryson and Julia Bryson (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy). Emily, last year's NCAA Champion in the 3,000-meter run, won the event in her first attempt at it this year with a time of 9:56.97, beating the runner-up from Merrimack by just a shade under one full minute. The Judges also took third and fifth in the 3K, as rookie Erin Magill (Moretown, Vt./Harwood Union) and senior Christine Minor (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) finished in 11:15.14 and 11:19.80, respectively. Julia captured the mile run with a time of 5:20.47. She was one of four Brandeis scorers in the event: sophomore Andrea Bolduc (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) was second in 5:21.96; classmate Elise Hallstead-Williams (Middletown, Conn./Mercy) was fifth in 5:47.34; and rookie Hannah Walsh (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence) was sixth in 5:54.41.

The women had a similarly strong showing in the 800-meter run, taking five of the six scoring spots. Three-time NCAA qualifier Doyin Ogundiran (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) led the way, winning the race in 2:18.92. Rookie Jac Guerra (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) was the runner-up in 2:22.49, while sophomore Lisbeth Valdez (Providence, R.I./Hope) was third in 2:22.76 and senior Maya Bliss (Williamstown, Mass./Amherst Regional) was fourth in 2:23.83. Senior Meaghan Barry (Marlborough, Mass./Worcester Academy) rounded out the scorers in sixth place in 2:31.05.

The women closed the racing portion of the meet with a win in the 4x400-meter relay, as the team of Ogundiran, rookie Devin Hiltunen (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy), Bliss and sophomore Leinni Valdez (Providence, R.I./Hope) defeated the runners-up from Southern Maine by two seconds.

For the men, the lone winner on the day was senior Regan Charie (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet) in the 60-meter dash. After running the fastest time in prelims at 7.27 seconds, he edged USM's Trey Rogers by a hundredth of a second, 7.19 to 7.20. Charie also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.33 seconds. Sophomore Lorenzo Maddox (Atlanta, Ga./Maynard Jackson) also scored in both events, taking third in the 60 in 7.25 and fourth in the 200 in 23.71.

The Brandeis men also had runners-up in the 600 through mile runs. In the 600 it was rookie Aaron Portman (Wheeling, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) with a time of 1:26.54. In the 800, sophomore Erez Needleman (Bronx, NY / High School of American Studies at Lehman College) was just off the pace by 0.23 seconds in 2:02.54, and classmate Josh Lombardo (Westbrook, Maine / Westbrook, Maine) finished second in the mile in 4:34.83. The Judges also took second and third in the 60-meter hurdles for the men, with sophomore Aaron Baublis (Westborough, Mass. / Westborough) placing second in 8.82 seconds, edging rookie Dion Morris-Evans (Canal Fulton, Ohio/ Northwest), who ran 8.82.

In men's field events, senior Scott Grote (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) was second in the weight throw with a heave of 14.17 (46-6). Sophomore Breylen Ammen (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) reached 4.10 meters (13-5 ¼) for second place in the pole vault and junior Jack Allan (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip Regional) was third in the long jump with a distance of 6.01 meters (19-8 ¾). Junior Willa Moen scored for the women in the field events with a fifth-place showing in the pole vault at 2.90 meters (9-6 ¼).

The Judges place second in the team standings in both events. The women were edged by Southern Maine, 121.50 to 118, while the men were a bit further back of the Huskies, 158-107.

Brandeis returns to action next weekend at Bowdoin College.
