Stender, Ocel claim UAA Athlete of the Week honors, Oct. 12

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University student-athletes Josh Ocel of No. Attleboro, Mass., and Ryan Stender of Amherst, Mass., have been selected as University Athletic Association (UAA) Players of the Week for men's soccer and men's cross country, respectively, for the week ending Oct. 11.

Ocel, a junior midfielder, was recognized as the Offensive Player of the Week for his play in a 2-1 UAA road victory at Case Western Reserve on Sunday. Ocel picked up assists as the Judges scored both of their goals off of corner kicks. He now has six assists for the campaign, tied for most in the UAA and 39th among all Division III players. It was his second career two-assist game and the fourth time he has been involved in multiple goals. He now has 15 helpers in just over a season-and-a-half, having missed his rookie campaign due to injury. One more assist will move him into Brandeis's career top-25. With 10 points (2 G, 4 A), Ocel leads the 10-1-1 Judges in scoring. Brandeis, ranked No. 4 in the nation in Division III by D3soccer.com and No. 7 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, takes on Massachusetts Maritime Academy tonight at 7 p.m.

Stender, a sophomore, is being honored by the UAA for the second time this season. Competing against Division I, II and III runners at the 2015 Open New England Championships in Franklin Park in Boston on Saturday, Stender covered the 8K course in 25:56.8, finishing 89th overall and 22nd among Division III runners. It marked the third time in as many races that Stender was the Judges' top competitor. Brandeis is back in action this Saturday at the Connecticut College Invitational before hosting the UAA Championships at Franklin Park on Halloween.

Ocel is a 2013 graduate of Worcester Academy.

Stender is a 2014 graduate of Amherst Regional High School.
