WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University rookie Sydney Goldman of Sherman Oaks, California, and senior Emily Bryson of Quincy, Massachusetts, have been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 21.
Goldman was honored as the UAA Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row. Goldman went 4-0 last week with a 1.27 earned-run average, allowing four earned runs in 22 innings. She earned a pair of non-conference wins against Clark, in which she struck out a career-high 11 opponents in a 9-0 road victory, throwing her second one-hit shutout of the season, and Worcester State, when she threw three scoreless innings of relief in an 8-0 win the next day. In a UAA series at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Goldman helped the Judges take three of four by earning complete-game wins of 3-2 and 6-2. She shut down the Tartans after they scored twice in the first inning of the first win, then again after they took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning of the series finale.
For the season - including another win yesterday at Framingham State - Goldman owns a 13-0 record with a 1.45 earned-run average, leading the league in both wins and ERA. She also ranks third in the UAA with 93 strikeouts. In head coach Danielle DelPonte's fourth season, the Judges are off to the best start in program history at 27-2-1 and were ranked 20th in Division III in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III poll. They will close out their regular season this weekend with four games against Emory. The Judges lead the Eagles by two games in the UAA standings and can earn their first conference title since 1995 with a split. The series starts on Friday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader.
Bryson was named the UAA Runner of the Week for an incredible 11th time in 2018-19. It's her third during the outdoor track and field season, and the 21st overall career UAA weekly honor for Bryson. She was recognized this week for her performance at Princeton University's Larry Ellis Invitational. Bryson added her name to Brandeis's record book in the fourth different event in school history, this time in the 1,500-meter run. Bryson lowered the mark, previously held by Grayce Selig '11, by more than five seconds to 4:23.02. She finished 10th in a race consisting mostly of Division I and non-collegiate runners. Bryson's time was just outside the all-time Division III top 10, and her time is four seconds clear of the second-place time in Division III this season.
Bryson and the Judges are headed to Atlanta this weekend for the 2019 UAA Outdoor Track and Field championships at Emory. Bryson is a nine-time UAA champion between cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. She was the Most Outstanding Performer at the 2019 UAA Indoor Championships.
Goldman is a 2018 graduate of Notre Dame High School.
Bryson is a 2015 graduate of North Quincy High School.
