Nicholson, Casanueva earn UAA postseason honors

WALTHAM, Mass. –  Brandeis University women's basketball players Hannah Nicholson of Sunderland, Vermont, and Camila Casanueva of Santa Barbara, California, have both earned postseason honors from the University Athletic Association. Nicholson was a second-team All-UAA honoree, while Casanueva was selected as the conference Rookie of the Year, in addition to earning honorable mention status.

Nicholson tied for the team lead in scoring, averaging 9.2 points per game and led the squad with 7.5 rebounds per game, fourth-most in the UAA. She led the team in scoring six times during the season and in rebounding 17 times. Nicholson scored in double digits 11 times and grabbed 10 or more rebounds nine times, accounting for four double-doubles this season. Nicholson had one stretch of three-straight games with double-doubles against UAA foes Carnegie Mellon (twice) and Case Western Reserve. In the Judges' Jan. 28 home win over CMU, she notched the team's season-high scoring performance with 23 points, then in the rematch in Pittsburgh, she had a career-high 15 rebounds, also the team's best performance of the season.

Casanueva finished third on the team in scoring, averaging 7.9 points per game, and topped the Judges in assists, averaging 2.5 per game, sixth-highest in the UAA. She led the team in scoring six times during the season and was team-high in assists on 12 occasions. Casanueva had six games scoring in double digits and had four more assists in a game seven times. On three occasions this season, she reached her career scoring high of 17 points, including in a 92-84 road win over Washington University in St. Louis on January 12, just Brandeis's second all-time victory in the Arch City. She had a career-best nine rebounds against the Bears in a home loss on February 9, and four times posted five assists in a game.

Casanueva is just the second Brandeis player to earn UAA Rookie of the Year honors, joining Jaime Capra '08, who won the award in 2005.

The Brandeis women's basketball team finished the regular season with a 12-12 record, 4-10 in the UAA. The Judges meet Springfield College in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III tournament first round tonight at 7 p.m. in Springfield.

Nicholson is a 2016 graduate of Burr and Burton Academy.

Casanueva is a 2017 graduate of Dos Pueblos High School.
