Casanueva, Sherman earn weekly hoops honors

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University sophomore Camila Casanueva of Santa Barbara, California, and senior Corey Sherman of Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, have each earned weekly honors for their performances on Judges' basketball court. Both were named University Athletic Association (UAA) Players of the Week for the week ending December 2nd, and both earned a spot on the D3Hoops.com National Team of the Week. Additionally, Casanueva was selected as the New England Women's Basketball Association Player of the Week.

Casanueva led the Brandeis women to a 2-0 week last week with wins over Salem State University, 74-61, and Johnson and Wales University, 77-60. Playing 79 of a possible 80 minutes in the two games, she averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, four assists and four steals per game while shooting 67 percent from the field, 64 percent from 3-point range and 93 percent from the line. In the win over Salem State, she scored 30 points, the first Judge to reach that milestone since 2010, and matched the Vikings first-half output with 18 points. Against JWU, she just missed her first career double-double with 17 points and nine boards.

In head coach Carol Simon's 32rd year, the Brandeis women are 3-4 so far on the season. Casanueva is third in the UAA in scoring, averaging 16.4 points per game. She leads the conference in minutes per game (34.9 mpg) and 3-pointers (20). She is also third in the league in 3-point percentage (45.5%) and assists per game (4.3 apg) and tied for fourth in steals per game (2.1 spg). The Judges return to action on December 8th at Gordon College.

Sherman guided Brandeis to its first championship at the New England Big Four Classic since 2012 last weekend after averaging 24.5 points, four rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals in wins over Salem State (77-69) and host Babson (74-49). He shot 67 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3-point range and 93 percent from the line in the two wins, earning tournament MVP honors in the process. He had 24 points, two rebounds and two assists in the win over Salem State and 25 points, six boards and three assists in the win over Babson.

Under first-year head coach Jean Bain, the Brandeis men are off to a 5-1 start, their best since the 2013-14 season. Sherman leads the team and ranks fifth in the UAA in scoring at 17.0 points per game. He's also second in the league in minutes per game (33.7 mpg), fifth in in free-throw percentage (84.8%) and tied for fifth in assists per game (3.2 apg). Brandeis travels to Becker College on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. as they look to move to 6-1 for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Casanueva is a 2017 graduate of Dos Pueblos High School.

Sherman is a 2015 graduate of Lower Merion High School.
