WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team led after each of the first three quarters of play, but the visiting University of Chicago Maroons used a terrific fourth period to defeat the Judges, 71-62, in University Athletic Association action tonight. With the loss, Brandeis falls to 6-8 overall, 2-2 in the UAA. Chicago improves to 12-3, 3-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brandeis's defense was outstanding in the first quarter, as the Judges held UC to just 4-of-15 from the field and 1-of-8 from 3-point range as they took a 19-12 lead.
- Senior Sarah Jaromin (E. Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) had nine points in the opening stanza.
- Though the visitors picked up their scoring in the second by hitting 7-of-17, the Judges hit 7-of-11 from the field and 2-of-3 from downtown to increase their lead to 40-32 at the break. Jaromin finished the first half with 14 points, as did UC's Taylor Lake.
- The Maroons clawed their way back into the game by outscoring Brandeis, 19-12, in the third. Both teams were 5-of-14 from the floor, but Chicago hit four 3-pointers to none for the Judges. The visitors also outscored Brandeis 5-2 from the line.
- In the fourth quarter, Brandeis went ice cold from the field, hitting just 2-of-14 shots, while Chicago netted 6-of-10, including 2-of-3 3-pointers. The Maroons outscored the Judges, 20-10, over the final 10 minutes of action to take the nine-point victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jaromin finished the game with a team-high 19 points for the Judges, hitting 7-of-14 from the field, 3-of-4 from downtown, and 2-of-2 from the line.
- Sophomore guard Camila Casanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos) added 18 points, including 10 in the second half to keep the Judges in the game.
- Sophomore Samira Abdelrehim (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills) led the Judges with seven rebounds, while junior Hannah Nicholson (Sunderland, Vt./Burr and Burton Acad.) and Casanueva each had six.
- Chicago had four players score in double digits, including Lake, who led all players with 20 points.
- Olariche Obi added 14 points and recorded a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds.
- Mia Farrell and Kati Heller had 12 points each. Heller's 12 points came off the bench, outscoring all the Brandeis reserves by herself, 12-11.
- Farrell led all players with four assists.
- Brandeis led UC in shooting for most of the game, but the fourth quarter gave the visitors a 39% to 38% edge from the field. Chicago also outscored Brandeis 27-15 from 3-point range and 18-15 from the line.
- The visitors held a 37-34 edge in rebounding, and though Brandeis committed 19 turnovers to 16 for the Maroons, the Judges held the 13-9 edge in points off miscues.
