WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University fencers Lucas Lin of Plano, Texas, and Samantha Shortall of Norwell, Massachusetts, have been named University Athletic Association Fencers of the Week for the week ending Jan. 26th.

For Lin, a sophomore sabre fencer, this is his second UAA weekly honor of the season. He was recognized after going 9-3 over the weekend against the Judges' four varsity opponents at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season at Boston College. Lin posted 3-0 records against Brown and Vassar, went 2-1 against non-conference foe Drew and was 1-2 against Boston College. Lin's sabre squad posted winning records in five of the team's six matches on the afternoon.

Shortall, a sophomore foil fencer, was honored for the first time this season after posting a team-best 13-1 record in six matches. Shortall was 2-1 against Brown in the first match of the day, then went 3-0 BC, Tufts and Drew and 2-0 against Vassar. The women's foil squad went 4-2 on the day.

Overall, both the Brandeis men's and women's teams went 4-2 at the NFC meet. Both teams defeated Tufts, Vassar, Dartmouth and Drew, but fell to Boston College and Brown. The women are 13-10, 9-3 in the NFC and will likely finish third, while the men are 12-9, 7-3 in the NFC and will likely place fourth.

Lin is a 2018 graduate of Plano West High School.
