WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University juniors Maggie Shealy of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Josh Shuster of Brooklyn, New York, have been named the University Athletic Association Fencers of the Week for their performances at the 2021 Western Invitational over the weekend of November 13-14.

Competing at the United States Air Force Academy, the Judges faced some of the toughest competition they will see all season. Shealy went 17-8 in women's saber for the weekend. She had perfect 3-0 marks against Incarnate Word, Stanford and Notre Dame, while going 2-1 against Cal-San Diego and Air Force on Day 1. She was 2-1 against North Carolina and Northwestern on Day 2 of action. The Judges went 0-9 as a team, with their closest match a 13-14 loss to host Air Force, but the women's saber squad had wins over Incarnate Word and NJIT. This was Shealy's second UAA Fencer of the Week honor of 2021-22 and the fourth of her career.

Shuster led the men's epee squad to success at Air Force. He posted a 14-8 overall record, with a winning mark in six of his 10 matches. The highlight of the meet for Shuster and the epee squad was his 3-0 mark against Notre Dame, which lifted the squad to a 5-4 win over the Fighting Irish. Shuster was down 0-4 in the final bout and rallied for a 5-4 win. Brandeis posted overall team wins against Incarnate Word (18-9) and NJIT (22-5), a team that had finished 4th at the NCAA Championships last spring.

The Brandeis fencing team will compete twice this week at MIT, with the annual Beanpot tournament between MIT, Boston College and Harvard on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. and the first of two Northeast Fencing Conference meets on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Shealy is a 2019 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.

Shuster is a 2019 graduate of Staten Island Technical High School.
