Shealy, Escueta take home UAA Fencer of the Week honors, Dec. 5

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University junior Maggie Shealy of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and first-year Tony Escueta of Grand Prairie, Texas, have been named the University Athletic Association Fencers of the Week for their performances during the week ending December 5th.

Shealy continued her saber excellence this season, going 15-2 at the Brandeis Invitational with both losses coming against St. John's. She was 3-0 against Yale, Cornell, Brown and MIT and 2-0 against Incarnate Word. The Judges went 2-4 overall on the day with wins over MIT and UIW, both by 16-11 scores. Shealy, who was named UAA Fencer of the Week for the fourth time in as many competitions this season, leads the Judges with a 54-12 record.

Escueta went a perfect 12-0 in saber for the Judges at the Brandeis Invitational, including three wins each against Yale, St. John's and MIT. The men's saber squad was 5-1. Brandeis was 3-3 as a team, with wins over Brown, Incarnate Word and Cornell (club) and 14-13 losses to Yale and MIT, as well as an 18-9 loss to St Johns. Escueta's 34-12 record is the top among Judge men this season. This is his second UAA Fencer of the Week award.

The Brandeis fencing team returns to action next semester when they host the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season on Jan. 22.

Shealy is a 2019 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.

Escueta is a 2021 graduate of Abeka Home School Academy.
