Kylie Herman places 15th in 200 fly at UAAs

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams both finished in eighth place at the 2017 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships this weekend. The men totaled 303 points, while the women had 209.  The Judges set or tied three program records in the process.

DAY ONE RECAP

TOP PERFORMANCES – DAY TWO

  • Rookie Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) had the team's top individual performance of the meet in the 100-yard backstroke. He qualified for B final in 10th place with a time of 51.11 seconds in the prelims, then followed that up with a 10th-place finish in the finals. In the finals, he tied his own school record, set in December, with a time of 50.88 seconds.
  • He also reach the finals in the 100-yard butterfly. After also taking 10th place in the prelims with a time of 51.00 seconds, he swam 51.49 in the second session of the day to place 16thoverall.
  • Two women also earned scoring finishes – sophomore Kylie Herman (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) placed 23rd in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.34 after posting a mark of 1:57.56 in the prelims.
  • Rookie Natalya Wozab (Plantation, Fla. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) finished 24th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.85.

RELAY RECORDS – DAY TWO

  • The women also had an eighth-place finish in the 800 free relay, where rookies Hwanee Park (Cumberland, Maine / Greely) and Phillipa Zheku (Woburn, Mass. / Woburn Memorial), junior Abby Damsky (New York, N.Y. / The Brearley School) and Herman posted a time of 8:13.00.
  • The women opened the day with a school record for the second day in a row, posting a 1:52.00 even in the 200 medley relay prelims. Junior Amy Sheinhait (Framingham, Mass./Framingham), Wozab, Park and rookie Yvette Smith (Gainesville, Fla. / Gainesville) shaved a quarter of a second off the previous record that had stood since 2009. The quartet were unfortunately DQ'ed in the finals.
  • Though the men's 200 medley relay also suffered from a DQ, Tamir Zitelny also broke another record, in the 50 backstroke with a time of 23.97 seconds.

TOP PERFORMANCES – DAY THREE

  • Tamir Zitelny qualified for the B finals in the 200 yard backstroke on the final day of competition, posting a time of 1:53.92, 16th in the prelims.
  • In the finals, Tamir broke his own school record once again as he finished in 11th place with a time of 1:51.88, knocking 0.29 seconds off the previous mark.
  • Brother Edan Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) was 24th in prelims in the same event with a time of 1:56.16, nearly five seconds faster than his season best. Edan placed 24thwith a time of 1:56.56.
  • Edan reached his second final of the day in the 200 fly for the men, placing 23rd with a time of 1:56.71 in prelims and 24th in the finals with a time of 1:58.25. His prelim time was fourth-fastest in school history.
  • On the women's side, Herman just missed out on setting a new school record in the 200-yard butterfly by six-hundredths of a second. She reached the finals in an event for the third straight day with a time of 2:12.53, 17th fastest in prelims but nudged into the B finals after scratches. Thanks to the extra push, Herman recorded a time of 2:10.95 in the finals, good for 15th place and just off the record set in 2008.
  • Rookie Noah Ayers (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) scored for the second time in the meet, coming in 24th in the 1,650 freestyle. He posted a time of 17:20.62, besting the next swimmer by 13 seconds to earn a point for his team.
  • Junior Genna Karp (Springfield, N.J. / Golda Och Academy) took 20th place in the 1-meter diving event for the women with a score of 203.55.
