Carter surpasses weight throw record again

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Brandeis University track and field teams continue to pick up steam as they roll toward the approaching championship season.  Competing at the Tufts Cupid Challenge at Tufts University the team put up some very strong performances highlighted by multiple DIII New England qualifying marks.

TOP WOMEN'S PERFORMERS

  • The women milers represented Brandeis well with senior Kyra Shreeve (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) and first-year Andrea Bolduc (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) both placing top 10.  Shreeve placed 7th in 5:20.18 to qualify for the Division III New England Championships.  This is the second event Shreeve has qualified for New Englands, after doing so in the 1000m on the same track last week. Bolduc continued her consistent freshman campaign running a personal best 5:24.27 for 10th.
  • Leinni Valdez (Providence, R.I./Hope) ran 1:40.81 in the 600m to place 4th.  The time was a small personal best for the freshman who continues adding to the impressive results being put up by the women's middle distance runners this season.
  • In the 60m-dash junior Kanya Brown (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) sprinted into the final with a time of 8.23. She placed 7th in the final running 8.29.  Both times were faster than anything the junior had run this season showing that she is rounding into form as the season progresses.
  • Senior Jordin Carter (Fort Wayne, Ind./R. Nelson Snyder) had a great day in the throwing circle.  Carter has been a force in the weight throw this season, and she continued her terrific improvement by resetting her school record, established last weekend. Carter placed second with a throw of 14.91m (48 feet, 11 inches).  Carter also recorded a 6th place finish in the shot put, throwing the implement 10.60m (34 feet, 9 ½ inches)

TOP MEN'S PERFORMERS

  • Sophomore Jack Allan (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip Regional) got the weekend started on Friday with the first day of the heptathlon.  Allan recorded personal best in both the 60m (7.48s) and high jump (1.85m) on his way to a first-day score of 2606 points. He proceeded to perform well on day 2 to finish with a personal best score of 4475 points.  This reset his own school record that, previously stood at 4330 points.  Allan's performance is currently ranked 17th in Division III. 
  • Junior Regan Charie (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) set a season-best of 7.19 in the 60m prelims to qualify for the Division III New England Championships as well as the final later in the day.  Charie would go on to run 7.18 in the final, matching his personal best while placing 4th.
  • Junior Scott Grote (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) also qualified for the Division III New England Championships with his heave of 14.34m; (47 feet-3/4 inch) . in the weight throw.  The performance was a huge personal best for Grote who previously threw 13.68m earlier this season.
  • The best distance performance of the day came from senior captain Ryan Stender (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional).  Stender put up the second-fastest 3000m performance of his career while winning his race today at Tufts.  His time of 8:27.03 currently sits at 12th in Division III this season.  Stender will look to return the NCAA championships in this event after competing in it at the 2016 meet.
  • Other top performances came from Charie in the 200m, sophomore Churchill Perry (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Westminster Academy) in the triple jump, and rookie Breylen Ammen (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional). Charie posted a 7th place finish with his time of 23.10 seconds, Perry a placed second in the triple with a distance of 12.86m (42 feet-2 ¼ inches) and Ammen placed 7th in the pole vault with a personal best of 4.25m (13 feet, 11 1/4 inches).

Both the men and women return to action next weekend with competitions at Boston University for the Valentine Classic or MIT for the Gordon Kelly Invitational.
